Stop Paying $150/Seat for Feature Flags: Building a Sub-Millisecond Engine with Go and SQLite

PyForge Team 6 min read2026-10-16

Commercial feature flag SaaS platforms charge absurd per-seat costs while introducing external network latency to your hot critical paths. When your application needs to evaluate a flag on every incoming request, making a remote HTTP call to a third-party vendor is an architectural anti-pattern.

The Architecture: Sub-Millisecond SQLite Caching

The core engine leverages Go for highly concurrent evaluation and an embedded SQLite database running in WAL mode with memory-mapped I/O (mmap). This setup allows application nodes to execute 100,000+ local flag checks per second with sub-millisecond tail latency.

Deterministic Canary Rollouts

To implement canary deployments without central state synchronization, we use murmur3 hashing over the user's persistent identifier (like user_id or org_id). This guarantees deterministic bucket allocation across distributed instances.

python
import mmh3

def is_feature_enabled(feature_key: str, context_id: str, percentage: int) -> bool:
    """Evaluate deterministic canary allocation via murmur3 hash."""
    if percentage <= 0:
        return False
    if percentage >= 100:
        return True

    hash_input = f"{feature_key}:{context_id}".encode('utf-8')
    hash_val = mmh3.hash(hash_input, signed=False)
    bucket = (hash_val % 100) + 1
    return bucket <= percentage

# Usage example for a 15% canary rollout
user_id = "usr_98x2a1"
if is_feature_enabled("v2_checkout_engine", user_id, 15):
    # Execute new checkout path
    pass

Automated Kill-Switches and Fallbacks

High-throughput applications require instantaneous kill-switches. By pairing an in-memory ring buffer for runtime metrics with local threshold triggers, FlagForge can automatically flip flags to emergency fallback states if error rates breach strict SLA limits.
